A Radish and A Castle

Rain fell softly in a constant patter last Saturday, the type of rain which does not soak you, but sticks in droplets to your clothes like a misty shell. On this rainy day, I decided to go to the Edinburgh Farmer's Market with my flatmate. We had never been before, and were up for something new. We set out on the fifteen minute walk armed with umbrellas, carrier bags, and anticipation.

The market was busy despite the rain, and walking around surrounded by families doing their weekly shopping for meat, vegetables, and chocolate, each exchanging pleasantries and small talk with familiar faces, made the rain feel cozy and comforting rather than dreary. It also reminded me that, though I'm not used to the rain, here people continue on as if it weren't there.

This farmer's market is unique among farmer's markets because it is on Castle Terrace, meaning it is directly below the looming Edinburgh Castle. How often can you say you went to buy vegetables at the city's castle? Further, most of the producers at the market grow what they sell, so all the goods are fresh as could be.

I ended up buying two pies, one pork and thistle and one haddock, leek, and potato. They were absolutely delicious, and I plan to go back next week to buy more. I also bought two chocolates, one rose & champagne, the other Irish coffee, and was given a white chocolate raspberry one for free. That act of kindness made my day.

After a successful market day, we walked home to store away our wares, already anticipating the next trip to Castle Terrace.
