Quebec City New Year

Quebec City New Year

This year, we celebrated the end of 2022 as a family in Quebec City. From Montreal, we took the train about four hours northeast and then, from the train station, walked up to our very nice air bnb. I always love traveling by train. The movement along the tracks is smooth and cozy, and being able to watch the world go by from a train seat is always comforting. We bought some coffees from the trolley and played cards or read books to pass the time.

Enjoying the train ride.

Once we arrived in Quebec City, we took a long walk uphill with our bags to our air bnb - a good leg stretch after the train journey. The air bnb was perfectly located and perfectly sized, but altogether too modern for our little family; we were baffled by the heating system, leaving us constantly too warm, and the high-tech oven full of touch activated buttons stood no chance against good old fashioned hobs. Haha.

Quebec City scenes from right outside the house.

A few frozen images. The snow melted on the second day as it got a tad warmer (but still quite cold) and began to drizzle instead. All together miserable weather, but we still found ways to enjoy ourselves!

Key to keeping cozy in the bad weather.

This mirror in our house was perfect for photos.

I will tell the tale of our short trip out of order, beginning with our final night: New Year’s Eve. For the final day of 2022, we went out to a beautiful 7-course dinner at a nice restaurant called Origine. Here are some photos from the walk to the restaurant and the meal. We had the option of vegan or omnivore, and had selections of each.

Walking to New Year’s Eve dinner through the icy, decorated streets.

It was overall an excellent night. Now, on the first two days:

This was our first lunch out on the day after our arrival - salmon pasta, cheese plates, peach schnapps in celebration. It was lovely.

Delicious salmon pasta.

After lunch, we strolled around the citadelle.

The weather was not great, creating a moody atmosphere.

The next day, we walked up to the viewpoint looking over the semi-frozen St. Lawrence River.

The Chateau Frontenac, shrouded in mist. This is a luxury hotel, in fact, and was opened in 1893.

On our final half day, January 1st, 2023, we took a little stroll and went out to a big brunch before the return train journey. For the rest of the time, we chilled in the house, enjoying each other’s company.

What a happy little getaway we had ringing in the new year!
